Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area
There is something for every visitor at Yaquina Head. Jutting into the Pacific Ocean, this harsh, unforgiving environment hosts many forms of life. Harbor seals and whales are visible offshore year-round. In spring and summer, thousands of seabirds flock to the near-shore islands to breed and raise their young. At low tide, you can observe pools filled with intertidal life. Oregon’s tallest and second-oldest lighthouse has illuminated this promontory since 1873.
Otter Rock
North of Newport, between Yaquina Head and Depoe Bay is Otter Rock. This special place is known as the Waikiki of the Central Oregon Coast. It’s a great place for beginner and experienced surfers to enjoy the Pacific Ocean swells year-round. Also, a wonderful place for an afternoon of beach soccer, a sunset bonfire, or just a fun day playing and looking for Agates.
Newport Sea Lion Docks.
California sea lions (Zalophus californianus) love to lay on the rocks and the docs while they are visiting Yaquina Bay. Port Dock One is the main place to see them up-close. Adult and sub-adult sea lion males can be found on the docs. They live here for 11 months out of the year. In July they migrate to the Channel Islands of southern California where the females stay year-round. Voted best Free tourist attraction in Newport! Port Dock One is open 24 hours a day 7 days a week.

South Beach State Park
Situated next to the Yaquina Bay Bridge, South Beach State Park begins in south Newport and stretches several miles down the Oregon coast. This historic park offers access to miles of broad, sandy ocean beaches and trails for walking and bicycling. Located just south of the South Jetty, this is your gateway to exploring Newport. Other activities around the park include fishing, crabbing, boating, surfing and beach combing. Attractions nearby include the Yaquina Bay Lighthouse, Yaquina Head Lighthouse, and marine life exhibits at the Hatfield Marine Science Center and the Oregon Coast Aquarium.
Yakona
The Yakona Nature Preserve is a 40-acre property situated along the Yaquina River in Newport, Oregon. It is a natural area that serves as a refuge for wildlife and offers visitors opportunities for outdoor recreation and education. The preserve features trails that wind through forests, meadows, and wetlands, providing scenic views of the river and its surroundings. Visitors can observe a variety of wildlife species, including birds, mammals, reptiles, and amphibians. The Yakona Nature Preserve is managed by a nonprofit organization called the Yakona Conservation Trust, which works to protect and enhance the natural values of the property. Please note, visitors are required to register for a free permit on the website.
