Whether living here or playing tourist, you’ll find plenty of things to see including wildlife refuges, state parks, lush forests, and endless coastlines. The charming coastal town of Newport, also known as The Dungeness Crab Capitol of the World, sits at the mouth of the Yaquina River on Oregon’s Central Coast. Established in 1891 as a port city, Newport boasts the Largest Commercial Fishing Fleet on the Oregon Coast and has long been established as an economic seafood hub. Visitors and locals alike love walking along the harbor in the Bayfront District to the watch the fleet processing fish and crab on the working docks. Newport is also home to the state’s largest marine science center, the Oregon Coast Aquarium, OCCC campuses, 2 lighthouses, countless hiking trails, lush green forests, cultural centers, shopping, dining, beach access sites, state parks, and several outdoor activity opportunities. Part of the Yaquina Bay community, with a population of over 11,000 warmhearted coastal citizens, Newport has a variety of communities to choose from. South Beach

South Beach is a quaint coastal neighborhood that packs a huge punch for the adventurer. Located just across the Historic Yaquina Bay Bridge, this hood comes with an assortment of parks and trails, including the Mike Miller State Park trail system and South Beach State Park. For the science and education curious you’ll find that the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), Hatfield Marine Science Center, and the Newport Aquarium all call South Beach home. And adjacent to South Beach State Park you’ll find South Beach Jetty! One of the most popular destinations for hunting Agate, exploring tide-pools, professional and sport fishing, as well as a favorite spot for enjoying sunsets over the Mighty Pacific Ocean.

BayFront

Where the action happens! The aroma of the sea and the sound of barking sea lions are a constant reminder of this humble harbor’s unique charm. Home to Oregon Coast’s largest commercial fishing fleet, the Bayfront District is an economic hub for Newport. Visit our working docks and watch the fleet bring in their daily bounty of Salmon, Ling Cod, Pacific Rockfish, Albacore, and when in season Dungeness Crab. Visitors can also find unique places to shop for treasures like antiques, art, hand-made gifts, and of course saltwater taffy. There is something for everyone along this stretch of water including Ripley’s Believe It or Not!, Madam Tussaud’s Wax Works, numerous Restaurants and Bars, and the famous floating Sea Lion Docks. If you’re lucky enough to call The Dungeness Crab Capitol of The World you home, living in or around the Bayfront will offer the most epic daily sunset and Yaquina Bay views.

NYE BEACH

Known as the cultural heart of Newport, Nye Beach has one of our best beach accesses and has been unique to our town for more than a century. Here you’ll find a little artistic coastal district with gift shops, galleries, coffee houses, wine bars, and whimsical sidewalk dining spots. Nestled in between all these quaint boutiques and eateries, you’ll find plenty of culture and literature at places like Oregon Coast Council for the Arts, Yaquina Art Association, Newport’s Performing Arts and Visual Arts Centers. Visitors will be busy tide-pooling, beachcombing, surfing, sail-boarding, crabbing, clam digging, kite flying, photographing, and sunset painting or, doing anything artistic you can imagine. Did we mention, Nye Beach has the cutest beach cottages and coastal houses dispersed throughout the district! Such a vibe.

Agate Beach

Agate Beach is the perfect place to relax and enjoy all that the Oregon Coast has to offer. A short drive from town, this district is home to stores, casual dining, many recreational activities, the landmark 1873 Yaquina Head Lighthouse and, the Yaquina Head Marine Garden wildlife refuge all in one area! Here you can go fishing, clamming, surfing at Agate Beach State Recreation Site, or just chill in a chair by the beach. Around here you can get your fix of both ocean and lagoon life with ease. This area is also home to many kinds of wildlife from seals to friendly birds, whales and if your lucky you can catch a glimpse the passing mammals who reside at Seal Rock!
